Neighborhood information
18th arrondissement

Paris’s 18th arrondissement is one of the most quirky areas of the city, formerly home to creative figures including Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali and Vincent Van Gogh. Tourists swarm to this district, eager to soak up the bohemian, multicultural atmosphere that is present on every street. Traditionally perceived as a rebellious area, Montmartre was the scene of the ‘Communard’ uprising that took place in 1871, and was also renowned for its red-light district that is portrayed in Baz Luhrmann’s ‘Moulin Rouge’ film. The 18th arrondissement is also the site of the Basilica of Sacré-Coeur, a striking white church that resembles a wedding cake. It is worth hiking up the hill to visit not only the interior of this architectural masterpiece, but also the views over Paris that are rivalled only by the Eiffel Tower. An itinerary is not recommended for a visit to Montmartre, as it is much more advisable to explore and lose yourself in the winding streets that make up this small village. Life in the 18th arrondissement will enable you to enjoy a diverse, eccentric and festive environment with plenty of shops, cafés, colourful food and flea markets in the vicinity. Fun fact: Café des Deux Moulins, made famous by the film ‘Amélie’ is located in Montmartre.
